Stephen Maguire v Dominic Dale 4 - 1 - Highest break 87 - Dale (Frame 2)

Frame 1 started off as very cagey affair, Dominic Dale potted the first red then ran out of position and with the black out commission, another safety battle ensured. Stephen Maguire had not settled, and it was Dale who started the better off the two men, with a break of 16. Maguire looked out of sorts as he failed to pot a long red. Maguire tired to plant a red onto the black in attempt to point a red but failed. Dale fouled on his next shot, going in off after missing a red. For the first shots of the 48 break Maguire did not have the white under control at all but all of a sudden, he got into his flow and looked like he go on to win the frame but missed an easy black. With the scores at 48 – 17, Dale stepped in and potted a brilliant long red into the green pocket, with the break on 22 he missed a red with the rest. Maguire showed Dale how to pot with the rest and went onto clear yellow, green, and brown, but missed the blue. Dale required one snooker; Maguire potted the blue to secure the first frame.

Frame 2 began with a disastrous break off for Dale, who hit the blue and let Maguire in after potting the opening red he missed an exceedingly difficult black. Dale cleared a red and played a very attacking shot of the black, as he smashed into the pack which gave the opportunity to make up for his bad break off shot. Which he did, making a break of 87 in double quick time, to make it 1 – 1.

Maguire broke off the 3rd frame. During a safety play Maguire committed a fouled after snicking a off a red, the cue-ball found its way into the green pocket. Dale made a mistake with safety but was fortunate not to leave anything potable. After a long period of superb safety play, it was Dale who potted a red but missed the black that went through the pack, disturbing only 2 reds, Maguire was in, but he was unusually misfiring the break broke down on 14 and missed a pink. Just as the frame was going scrappy, Dale turned on the style and quickly set about making a frame winning. But with the break on 21, he missed a red. With the balls open, it was Maguire’s turn to try and win this topsy turvy frame, but he missed a straight pink into the middle. Back came Dale, who made a break of 24 and then he missed a red and somehow the cue-balled went in off. Maguire put Dale in a snooker on the last red that Dale miss-cued but hit the red on the second attempt. Then after Maguire messed up the safety, Dale potted the red but missed the yellow. With Maguire needed to clear the colours, which he did by potting a brilliant green and a very tough black.

Frame 4. After bad safety play from Maguire, allowed Dale in to pot the red Maguire had pushed over the left bottom corner pocket. Dale made a break of 13 and missed a black that somehow stayed out and hung over the left bottom corner pocket. Maguire missed yet another long red, let Dale back in but failed get onto a red after potting the black. Things went bad to worse for Dale as fouled by hitting the pink. With the scores at 21 - 10 to Dale, it was Maguire who was in again, but yet again he failed to convert another red. After Dale had potted a brilliant long red and black, he ran out of position and was forced to play safe. Maguire whacked in a great plant on a red from the top of the bunch, the cue-ball smashed into the pack and during the break he was looking more determined to convert the break into a frame winning chance, which he did with ease, potting each ball straight into the heart of the pockets. He missed the last red but made a break of 58, he had just done enough to go two frames in front and one frame away from round 2.

Maguire potted the first red in frame 5 and never looked back, even with the black out of play managed to make a break of 52 and then he managed to disturb the black from the cluster of three reds. Then he missed a red, and Dale missed a red. He went on to make a further break of 15 and Dale said that was enough. Maguire won 4 - 1.
