Shaun Murphy v Zak Surety 4 - 1
Highest Break - Murphy 119 (Frame 5)
Zak Surety started out frame 1 with a confident 62 break
unfortunately the brake broke down, Surety made a bad safety error which let
the defending champion Shaun Murphy in to win by one point on the black with a
63 break.
In frame 2 he ran out of position on a break 16, played a
bad safety left a long red for Murphy which he took. Then there was a slight
pause in play as there was interference that was putting Shaun off, but when
play resumed he made a 107 break his first century of the tournament and the
Welsh Open’s second with Ding Junhui’s 102) the highest break of the match and
the tournament so far.
Frame 3 began with bad break-off shot from Surety, which
left a long red for Murphy which he missed, Surety missed another red, leaving
Murphy with a plant which he missed, Surety got in and along with some really
tricky shots made a fantastic break of 60 but missed an easy red into the
middle but was lucky not to leave a shot on for Murphy. After a short battle,
Murphy potted a risky red, lost position and laid a good snooker behind the
yellow with 6 reds bunched around the pink spot, he missed the first attempt, hit
the reds on the 2nd but left Murphy a pot which he missed by a long
way. With 55-point lead, Surety made a break of 4, but ran out of position.
Murphy played a long plant, he missed it and Surety potted a red, played safe.
Murphy made a 13 break and then an 8 but one red left on the table and scores
at 27 – 65 in Surety’s favour, Murphy potted the last red but failed to get
onto the black and then needed two 4-point snookers, murphy cleared the yellow
and after failing to get the snookers required on the green. Surety made an 18
break and reduced the deficit to be one frame behind. He did well to win a
23-minute frame.
Murphy broke frame 4 off, Surety missed a long red. After
potting a fantastic long red and breaking into the reds from the green, Murphy
made a break of 46 and missed a long red, then Surety missed. During a short
safety battle, Murphy committed a 4-point foul, after another short bout of
safety play, the white was in the jaws of yellow pocket and Murphy potted a
wonderful long red into the bottom right corner but missed a long red. With the
scores at 68 – 4 to Murphy and 4 reds left, Surety needed two 4-point snookers
to tie. Zak then made a 5 break, Murphy missed a difficult red with the rest,
Surety stepped in and made a break of 8 but made an error and left Murphy with
a long red again which he took brilliantly, missed the black but Surety
conceded.
Surety missed a long red with his first shot of frame 5,
Murphy potted an easy red and went onto to make his second century of the match
and the second highest break (3 points behind Joe O’Connor’s 121 break) of the
tournament so far with a 119 to win his opening match and looks very strong in
his title defence.
